A Rose In The Twilight (PSV) – bloody peculiarA dark and disturbing fairy tale with echoes of Team ICO’s classic games comes to PS Vita and PC.With the Nintendo Switch doing surprisingly well so far, speculation has inevitably begun as to whether Sony or Microsoft might consider creating their own hybrid consoles. We’re sure the question has already crossed their minds, but the problem for Sony is that they already have a very capable portable console. And while the PS Vita never really took off in the West it’s still one of the most popular formats in Japan. Which guarantees a steady supply of enjoyable oddities such as A Rose In The Twilight. We use oddity purely in the positive sense, as although the gameplay has some familiar elements A Rose In The Twilight is a very distinctive game in most other respects. The animation, for example, is very limited but the painterly artwork helps create a worryingly foreboding atmosphere, as the hapless main character embarks on an adventure in which causing her own death is the only way to progress. AdvertisementA Rose In The Twilight is a 2D puzzler at heart, and there’s clearly an influence from Team ICO games such as The Last Guardian. The general tone and art style is also reminiscent of the underrated, physical copies of which came with a free copy of htoL#NiQ (aka The Firefly Diaries) – to which A Rose In The Twilight is a loose follow-up.

Only the most dedicated fans of Japanese gaming will recognise those names, but that doesn’t mean this new game doesn’t have broader appeal; especially as it’s also being released on Steam.A Rose In The Twilight’s protagonist is a young girl named Rose, who wakes up in a mysterious castle to find out she has a giant thorn stuck in her back. There’s a fairy tale quality to much of the game’s story and setting, albeit the old school Brothers Grimm kind of fairy tale that always ends painfully for the majority of those involved.
Sep 27, 2019 Instructions. Open “A Rose in the Twilight” folder, double click on “Setup” and install it.; After installation complete, go to the folder where you extract the game. Open “SKIDROW” folder, copy all files and paste it where you install the game.; Then double click on “rose” icon to play the game.
This is made clear via the ‘blood memories’ that Rose collects from discovered corpses, which trigger macabre little cut scenes that show how the victim died and hints at the equally disturbing backstory of Rose and the castle. The game is at its most disturbing though, when it comes to one of the multiple instances where Rose has to sacrifice herself in order to progress further. This involves everything from entering an iron maiden to using a hangman’s noose embedded with thorns. Rose is reincarnated again afterwards but these sequences can be genuinely disturbing to watch, as the limited but effective animation makes it clear that Rose knows what she’s in for and has no other choice.
AdvertisementRose is completely unable to defend herself, but early on she meets up with a golem-like ally who is able to take on most of the heavy lifting – and throwing. Rose does have unique talents of her own though, primarily being able to absorb blood and transfer it into objects in order to make them come alive.
This works like a two-way version of Stasis from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, as you either drain the blood out of objects to stop them moving or transfuse it into everything from gear cogs to monsters. A Rose In The Twilight (PSV) – this isn’t going to end wellThe set-up clearly has a lot of potential, but you quickly realise that the question is whether the game can make the most of its mechanics.
A lot of the early puzzles are very straightforward and predictable, and are made needlessly frustrating because although the solution is usually very obvious it takes a lot of faffing around switching between Rose and the golem to actually go through the motions of solving them. It’s a good few hours before the puzzles start to get genuinely interesting, but when they do they’re very compelling. Extracting blood from inanimate objects doesn’t make much logical sense, but the physics-based puzzles work particularly well. By the end of the game you’re solving puzzles across multiple rooms, which takes real forethought and planning. But since the game is only four or five hours long in total it’s all over just as it starts to get interesting. In Short: Despite some notable missteps, this peculiar mix of macabre storytelling and 2D puzzle-solving still has an interesting story to tell.Pros: Haunting art style and some touching visual storytelling.
The key puzzle mechanics are clever and (eventually) used to good effect.Cons: The game’s pretty short and by the time it’s firing on all cylinders it’s all but over. Frustrating controls and checkpointing. Early puzzles are very obvious but take too long to work through.Score: 6/10Formats: PS Vita (reviewed) and PCPrice: £14.99Publisher: NIS AmericaDeveloper: Nippon Ichi SoftwareRelease Date: 14th April 2017Age Rating: 12Email, leave a comment below,.
