These wings belonged to a statue of the goddess Victoria (Nike), goddess of victory. The design on the wings indicates they belonged to the statue depicting her ', (that is of course, just a modern depiction of what its likely design was) the design for which originally came from a bronze statue commissioned by Augustus to be placed in the Curia Julia (c. 29 BC), commemorating his victory in the Battle of Actium.I found which has interesting information about bronze statuettes, around the midpoint it talks about a statuette of Victoria which actually departs from the traditional and common 'globe pose'.I took this photo during my visit to Rome back in June!
